THE Do Not Call Registry covers fixed lines and requires calling line numbers to be displayed ("What about fixed lines, unlisted incoming calls?" by Mr Francis Cheng; Oct 8).

From Dec 2, individuals may list both their fixed-line and mobile numbers with the Registry, either online (www.dnc.gov.sg) or by calling the toll-free numbers provided. Registration via SMS is for only mobile-phone numbers.

Under the Do-Not-Call requirements of the Personal Data Protection Act 2012, organisations must check with the Registry to ensure that the telephone numbers they intend to send telemarketing messages to are not listed in the Registry, unless consent has been given by the individual for telemarketing purposes. This applies to all eight-digit Singapore mobile and fixed-line numbers starting with "3", "6", "8" or "9".

Under the Act, organisations are required to display their calling line identity when making telemarketing calls and provide their contact information in the telemarketing message sent to individuals.

People who receive telemarketing calls from "blocked" numbers may inform the Personal Data Protection Commission, which will work with the telcos to investigate such cases and take the necessary action.
