What Data Privacy Act Does Not Cover

WE HOPE to address Mr Chin Kee Thou's concerns ("'No junk mail' sign for letterboxes"; June 12).

There are already ways for residents who do not wish to receive advertisement mail to opt out of receiving them.

Currently, residents who prefer not to receive advertisement mail sent by businesses via SingPost may call SingPost on 1605.

Residents living in HDB flats may also lock the aperture of their letterbox to avoid receiving unsolicited advertisement mail.

The Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) is meant to address situations which involve the use of personal data. Where a resident's personal data has not been used, such as unaddressed general advertisement mail, the PDPA does not apply.
